Detox Basics

In a world filled with pollutants, processed foods, and stressors galore, the idea of detoxing our bodies has become more enticing than ever. But what does it really mean to detox, and is it worth the hype? Let’s break it down, shall we? At its core, detoxing is about giving your body a much-needed break from the onslaught of toxins and impurities that accumulate over time. Think of it as hitting the reset button on your health, clearing out the cobwebs and making room for vitality to flourish.

So, how does one embark on this noble quest for detoxification? Fear not! There’s no need to stock up on exotic potions or embark on a juice cleanse marathon all at once. Instead, start by focusing on nourishing your body with real, whole foods that support its natural detoxification pathways. Load up on leafy greens, colorful fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and plenty of good water to flush out toxins and replenish your cells.

“The body’s ability to heal is greater than anyone has permitted you to believe.”

Detoxing isn’t just about what you put into your body—it’s also about what you eliminate. Say goodbye to processed foods, refined sugars, excessive caffeine, and alcohol, at least for a little while. Give your digestive system a break from the heavy lifting and opt for lighter, more easily digestible fare. And don’t forget to indulge in some self-care along the way—whether it’s through gentle movement, deep breathing, or simply taking a moment to pause and savor the sweetness of life.

Our functional doctor taught us in our very first appointment about the bucket analogy. A bucket of garbage in our kitchen must be emptied regularly, however if it gets too full it will overflow causing many other issues in the house.

Our body is no different.

If our body cannot get the garbage out on a timely and effective basis, other issues start to happen. If not dealt with, chronic disease can set in.

What is in our body’s bucket of garbage? Toxins, toxins, and more toxins. We are exposed to toxins daily from a variety of sources such as heavy metals, microplastics, antibiotic laced food, seed oils, pesticides, chemical fertilizer, mold mycotoxins, blue light from electronics, water, EFMs, processed/refined foods, MSG, artificial sweeteners, parasites, protozoans, personal care products, cleaning products, bad bacteria, fragrances, and coated cooking pans just to name a few. Toxins can make people sick over time and the exposure rate to them is compounding on an annual basis. It’s impossible to avoid toxins, yet the good news is that as much as we continue to be exposed, our bodies are eliminating the toxins as quickly as possible.

As for how often you should detox, well, that’s a bit of a personal preference. Some people swear by seasonal cleanses, while others prefer a more intuitive approach, listening to their bodies and detoxing as needed. Some incorporate techniques such as rebounding, dry brushing, light therapy, tongue scraping, oil pulling, sauna therapy, flotation therapy, sweating, parasite cleanse, kidney/liver cleanse, colon cleanse, heavy metal detox, castor oil packs, coffee enemas, IV therapy, grounding, and the list goes on.

Ultimately, it’s about finding what works for you and your unique needs. If you are working with a medical professional, they can help safely guide you to a detox program geared toward your individual and unique needs. Whether you detox once a year or once a month, the key is to approach it with mindfulness, intention, and a healthy dose of self-love. After all, when it comes to detoxing, the journey is just as important as the destination. We’ll cover more on the important topic of detox in upcoming posts.
